The American Tanto blade was originally invented for piercing armor. Made in the style of weapons of Japanese samurai, it was popularized by Cold Steel in the 80s of the last century. The Tanto knife has a high point with flat grinding, which results in an extremely strong point that is ideal for striking hard materials. The thickness of the Tanto blade is 4 mm thick and it contains a lot of metal near the tip, so it is able to absorb the impact from re-piercing, which can cause most other knives to break.
The front edge of the Tanto knife meets the back (non-sharp) edge at an angle, not a bend. As a result, the Tanto blade does not have a belly, which is sacrificed in exchange for a stronger tip.
